Mandela Washington Fellows
Perspective From Oklahoma

The Mandela Washington Fellowship began in 2014 and is the flagship program for the Young African Leaders initiative.  Each year up to 700 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa between the ages of 25 and 35 travel to the U.S. to hone their skills at a U.S. University for 6 weeks.  Groups of approximately 25 fellows, typically a consortium from 15 to 20 different countries, spend time learning about business, civic engagement and public management. The initiative operates as an exchange program through the U.S. Department of the State and IREX (International Research & Exchanges Board), which functions as a global development & educational non-profit organization.  OSU has been selected as one of 27 participating universities in the U.S. for the 2019 program.
